Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.
—Mother Teresa
Isolation
Trauma shatters false assumptions that give us security. For example, “Bad things don’t happen to good people,” and “If I pray, abuse will stop,” or “Most people are basically good.” You can probably relate to the concept of shattered trust. We sure can. We can’t un-know.
In this chapter, you will discover that you’re not alone. Even God’s prophets struggled with relational disconnection created by abuse and complained bitterly against God. “O Lord, you deceived me, and I was deceived; you overpowered me and prevailed” (Jeremiah 20:7). God listened to them and eventually restored their sense of trust—in Him and then in others. “But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior” (Jeremiah 20:11a).
God promises to do the same for you, but you must first learn how to pour your honest and unfiltered heart out to him. Feeling everything, holding nothing back. God is for you and will teach you how to trust again. But first, you must come out of hiding.
Take our hand. We’ll show you how.
